Finally, I’ve had the chance to see 5 Seconds of Summer live in Vienna and I just can say I don’t regret it. When you’ve asked me a year ago how I’m thinking about 5SOS I would have answered something like:” Meeeh – I’m too old for this pop-punk stuff, I’ve had this phase when I was 16 with All Time Low and I’m 21 now.“ But now I’m thinking in a different way again. My music taste recently went back to more pop-punk, punk rock style, I think it also has to do something with the fact, that my friends are listening to more electro or mainstream music, which also has a big influence on me.
But the real reason why I’m starting to hear again this type of music, was my little sister. She told me to listen to 5SOS and recommend them. Thanks to her for that and sorry for my doubts at the beginning. Apparently the Vienna Concert was the first show of their European Sounds live feels Live tour, and it also was the first time ever, that the Australian boys are playing in Austria. I had the luck that I got a standing place ticket so I decided to go there really late at 6.30 pm, when they open the doors. Many fans were waiting there since 9:00 AM in the morning, which must have been really hard, because it was really cold and rainy on this day.
Opening Act: Don Broco
I was a little bit confused about the opening act, because I’ve known Don Broco a long time before I’ve ever heard about 5SOS the first time. It must come with my little weakness for British rock bands. Don Broco are more alternative and punk than 5SOS, but as a fan of punkrock it was for me the perfect warm-up and start for the evening. From the first song the band gave everything to win the crowds attention and they really did this quite good. The crowd were dancing and jumping from the start. I think it’s one of the main factors, that the band on stage has fun with playing and entertaining on stage and Don Broco definitely had fun. I would check out the album „Automatic“ from Don Broco. It’s really worth it. After 4-5 songs they said goodbye to the crowd and thanked them for a really great tour start in Europe.
Main act: 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS)
The most girls that surrounded me in the pit, were really young and the most of them were also really nervous. And I can really relate to them, because if you’re that young and you are going to see your favourite band for the first time, it feels like Christmas and birthday together. So in the pit there was really a tense vibe. After a pause of half an hour, 5 seconds of summer came on stage and a wave of screaming started right after they playing the Intro of “Carry On “. After the little intro they continued with the power song „Hey Everybody1“, one of the latest singles from their second album “Sounds Good Feels Good “. A clever trick to start with the powerful songs. But in this case I think 5SOS could have started with everything the crowd would have gone crazy as hell, even if there were just standing there and doing nothing. 5SOS played two more songs until they first started to really talk to the crowd and introducing themselves. It seemed that they had needed a little time to warm up.
They’ve started at first with thanking the fans for the possibility that they could play in Vienna for the first time and how much they like Vienna. They also joked about the references between Australians and Austrians, because it’s normal that these two countries often got twisted.
The setlist was really mixed with songs from the older and their second album. Old Songs for example „Voodoo Doll “, „Good Girls “ or „Disconnected“ were played but also the new songs like „Waste The Night“, „Catch Fire“ or „Vapor“ found their place in the setlist.
But the highlight of the night was the Vienna Song Jam called „We had the biggest Wiener Schnitzel“. The four boys really seem to like the typical Austrian food and decided to dedicate Vienna this song, the fans were really touched by this move and the crowd were singing and screaming along with 5SOS „We had the biggest Wiener Schnitzel“. It also has trended on twitter that night. For an encore the fans also had to scream “Wiener Schnitzel“, which had sounded really funny and weird at the same time. As encore 5SOS played the hits “She’s Kinda Hot“ and “She Looks So Perfect“.
At the end I can say that 5SOS really had a good premiere concert in Vienna and as they said there could be a next time for seeing them live in Austria again. Also Don Broco had given their best to the crowd. As sceptical as I was, 5SOS really rocked the stage and showed how to entertain their big fan base.
